Is the December birthstone called by different names?
Tanzanite is the name of the gemstone that is called the December birthstone.
Before I knew about Tanzanite, I thought the Blue Topaz was considered the birthstone for December. In some of my research, I also discovered that the Blue Aquamarine is referenced when searching for the birthstone for December. Aquamarine is the March birthstone.
One thing for sure is that the December birthstone is very pretty, but what is the color? One thing that seems to be somewhat common is that people think the color for the December birthstone is very pretty and the color is blue.
Tanzanite was named by Tiffany and Co for the country, Tanzania, in which it was discovered in 1967. It is a rare gem found only in the Mount Kilimanjaro foothills. Depending on its crystal orientation, it may appear alternately sapphire blue, violet, and burgundy. Incandescent lighting brings out the violet hues, while the blues are more evident in fluorescent lighting. In its rough state, it is a reddish brown color. To bring out the blue violet of the stone, it requires artificial heat treatment to 600 degrees C in a gemological oven.
Will people know the difference between Tanzanite dangle earrings, Blue Aquamarine dangle earrings, or blue Topaz dangling earrings, if you don't tell them? One thing that seems to be somewhat common is that people perceive the December birthstone to be blue. The amazing thing about all of these gemstones is all of them come in a very pretty blue, and all can be found with complimentary coordinates, such as necklaces, bracelets, pins, etc.
